ARNO press release on Rohingya problem

Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO)

Press release dated September 28, 2018
ARNO welcomes the Human Rights Council’s resolution on Myanmar and calls for further action towards full accountability
ARNO welcomes the UN Human Rights Council’s landmark resolution on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar. The Council calls for the establishment of a new impartial and independent mechanism (IIM) to collect, preserve and analyse evidence of the most serious international crimes and violations of international law committed in Myanmar since 2011. In parallel, the extension of the mandate of the Fact-Finding Mission is key to ensuring continuity of action until the IIM is established.

“The creation of an ad-hoc mechanism for the collection of evidence of the gravest crimes is a crucial stepping stone towards full accountability, however it is vital that the focus of such efforts transition quickly into prosecutions. The lack of accountability for the horrific crimes committed by the Myanmar military continues to embolden its campaign of brutality and ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya. We urge the international community to build on this important resolution and ensure accountability takes place; including by demanding the UN Security Council refer Myanmar to the International Criminal Court and asking the U.N. General Assembly’s Third Committee to take up the issue next month”, said Nurul Islam, chairman of the ARNO.
