Release the Uighurs

The Chinese government has detained over one million Uighur Muslims in its concentration camps, placed one million Chinese Communists in their homes, and has forcefully taken their children to orphanages to raise them as atheists.

After the Holocaust over 70 years ago, 149 countries signed a genocide treaty to prevent this horror from ever being repeated. However, the world’s failure to stop the genocide of Rohingyas in Burma makes it clear we have failed. Even worse, it seems to have encouraged China to do the same to its own minorities.

Article 36 of China’s constitution guarantees citizens freedom of religious belief, and bans discrimination based on religion. However, over the last three years, the Chinese government has stepped up its decades-long persecution of the Uighur community in Xinjiang, in northwestern China.

Uighur Muslims are struggling for freedom, liberty and justice. If you enjoy these freedoms, you will enhance them by working for the freedom for others. As people of faith, fellow Muslims to the Uighurs, as well as Americans living in a democracy, we are in a unique position to speak up on their behalf. And our government can and will listen.

But first things first: Learn more. This issue of Sound Vision’s newsletter focuses on Uighur Muslims. Once you become aware of their struggle, let others know as well. Then, organize to support them. Sound Vision has published an informative booklet about Uighur Muslims which you can use to raise awareness. You can download a digital copy here or call 1-800-432-4262 to order copies for distribution at your Masjid.

Please also visit SaveUighur.org for more information and regular action alerts. Resources and updates can also be found at Facebook.com/ChinaMuslims

Finally, the following is a peace and justice calendar of events you can participate in to speak out for Rohingya and Uighur Muslims. Please attend and encourage others to as well:

Peace,
Sound Vision Team
