The Taj Mahal is caught in a tug of war over Indian identity

The Taj Mahal is India’s best-known, most internationally recognisable monument, as indelibly linked to the country as the Great Wall is to China. Commissioned in 1632 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his wife, the graceful marble mausoleum draws millions of visitors annually, including most foreign dignitaries and tourists passing through Delhi.
Under BJP's rule, this great monument has become a bone of contention for Indian identity.
