Al Jazeera: the listening post: speaking the unspeakables in Bangladesh

In recent years, Bangladesh Government has been criticized by various human rights and advocacy groups about enforced disappearance of dissenters. Such reports, if true, send a dire  warning for the Hasina government to amend its ways to ensure that the genuine concerns or views of anyone on matters related to or critical of government officials are not muzzled inside Bangladesh. Let the corrective actions allaying such concerns and fears assure the people that they matter in a democratic Bangladesh. It cannot afford to repeat the events of 1975.

"Enforced disappearance is a crime under international law. Such incidents have a chilling effect among communities about their safety. No one should have to live in deprivation of their right to personal liberty," said a statement released by Amnesty on Friday.
Enforced disappearances have mushroomed in Bangladesh since Hasina took power in 2009, according to rights groups.
Odhikar, a Bangladeshi group, says more than 500 people have gone missing in the last 12 years, including many activists suspected to have been abducted by security agencies.
