A message from Dr. Mujahid on Uighur situation
Last week, I met with the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and before that with congressional staff from both the Senate and the House. Based on all I am hearing I believe it is safe to assume that if voters don’t take place in the next few weeks, nothing might happen until 2021.
We need to get the following bills passed:
- “Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019” in the Senate (S.178);
- “Uyghur Human Rights and Policy Act of 2019” in the House (H.R.649); and
- The “Burma Human Rights and Freedom Act of 2019” (S.1186) in the Senate
These bills are the key to mobilizing the U.S. government on the behalf of our persecuted Uighur and Rohingya brothers and sisters.
Friends, I don’t have to tell you that this would be a disaster.
3 million Uighurs are detained in China’s concentration camps, making them the largest since Nazi Germany. They are dying on a regular basis; by 2021, many thousands more will have died. We must do everything in our power to stop this from happening.
Likewise, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, yesterday said that Burma is unwilling to take back Rohingya refugees. More than a million Rohingya sit languishing in the camps in Bangladesh, or in an open-air prison where they are constantly under threat of attack in Burma itself. We still must do everything we can to guarantee a safe, secure return and a restoration of citizenship for the Rohingya.
Action Needed:
First, please call your Senators and Congressperson and ask them to push for a vote on these bills: S.178, S. 1186, and H.R. 649. Tell them you will call back later to follow up. Visit saveuighur.com/congress to follow a guided calling script. Please tell them it’s now or never to do the right thing and take a stand for human rights by helping the Rohingya and the Uighurs.
You can find the contact information for your elected officials here. Remember: democracy takes the engaged participation of citizens like you to work. We have to come together in one voice to speak out for these bills and help them pass the House and the Senate so that they can become law.
Second, download the attached flyers (Uighur Flyer & Rohingya Flyer) and distribute it at your masjid after prayers, or try asking your imam to raise awareness about the issue in their khutbah.
Third: Join us on June 18-19 for advocacy day in Washington DC to push for these three bills. Today is the last day to register: StopGenocide.org/register
Thank you so much for everything you do. Together we can make a difference. Time is running out, so please act now.
Peace,
Abdul Malik Mujahid
