UNSC to convene over Israel's killing of Hamas chief Haniyeh

The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency session over the killing of Hamas political bureau leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran's capital Tehran on Wednesday, Russia said.

The meeting, requested by Iran and supported by representatives of Russia, China and Algeria, is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (2000 GMT), said a spokesman for the Russian presidency, which holds the rotating leadership of the council.

Iran's permanent mission to the U.N. on Wednesday called for an urgent meeting of the UNSC.

A letter was sent to Vassily Nebenzia, the permanent representative of Russia and the current president of the U.N. Security Council, and described the killing of Haniyeh as a "terrorist attack and an act of aggression on the sovereignty and territory."

In the letter, Iran strongly condemned the "aggressive action of the Zionist regime" in the assassination of Haniyeh, characterizing the "terrorist act" as part of the assassinations of Palestinian resistance leaders and the genocide against Palestinians.

Emphasizing the role of the U.S. as the strategic ally and supporter of the Israeli regime, the letter said: "This act could not have occurred without the authorization and intelligence support of the U.S."

The letter called for decisive action from the international community and the U.N. Security Council to punish the perpetrators, requesting an emergency meeting of the council.

"In light of these grave consequences of Israeli criminal acts on regional peace and security, the Islamic Republic of Iran calls upon the United Nations Security Council to condemn unequivocally and strongly the acts of aggression and terrorist attacks by the Israeli regime on Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as recent acts of aggression," the letter noted.

It also urged the U.N. Security Council to consider sanctions and other measures to punish Israel for its violations of international law.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.

Haniyeh was reelected as the head of the Hamas political bureau in 2021 for a second consecutive term, slated to end in 2025.

Early Wednesday, the Palestinian resistance group Hamas announced that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran.

Israel has not yet confirmed or denied its involvement.

The killing of Haniyeh came as Israel continued its devastating military campaign in the Gaza Strip which has killed more than 39,400 victims and injured over 91,000 since Oct. 7 following an attack by Hamas.

Bowen: Israel's killing of Haniyeh deals hammer blow to ceasefire prospects

 BBC

Israel has inflicted two devastating blows on its enemies.

It has not confirmed that it killed the Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, but it is hard to see who else would have wanted him dead more than the Israelis. As for the Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr, Israel says he was killed in Beirut in an “intelligence-based elimination”.

For Israel, everyone senior in Hamas is a legitimate target after the attacks of 7 October 2023, which inflicted the worst single day of bloodshed on Israel since independence in 1948.

Fuad Shukr, Israel says, was killed because as a veteran Hezbollah commander he was responsible for the rocket attack that killed 12 children and young people in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Hezbollah has confirmed he was killed in the raid on Beirut. It denies carrying out the attack in the Golan.

Once again, the Middle East is full of speculation that the all-out war feared since 7 October is imminent. The deadly irony is no side wants that war, but increasingly they are prepared to risk it.

The Israelis have been under pressure from their American allies to calibrate their response to Hezbollah, inflicting a blow that will hurt the group without provoking a devastating retaliation and igniting a wider and deeper war.

But two assassinations amount to a major gamble.

Israel, under pressure from its allies in Washington, wanted to inflict a blow on Hezbollah that would not extract a devastating retaliation. The leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, might still decide that an attack on their stronghold in southern Beirut warrants a matching attack on Tel Aviv.

Israel might also have calculated that Iran would not go to war over an assassinated Palestinian leader, even though his death in their capital, under their protection, is a humiliation.

Killing Haniyeh, just after he had met the new Iranian president, is a dramatic display of Israel’s reach.

Hezbollah posted this image on Telegram on Wednesday confirming the death of Hezbollah's Fuad Shukr

The Islamic Republic thought it re-established deterrence when it fired hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel in April - that claim has now been exposed as hollow. April’s barrage was also retaliation, for the Israeli air strike that killed two Iranian generals in Iran’s embassy in Damascus.

More retaliation looks certain from Iran, its ally Hezbollah or one of its proxies. Pro-Iranian militias in Iraq have made it clear that they blame the US equally for what has happened. In the Red Sea, the Houthis might redouble their attacks out of Yemen.

There are limits to what Hamas can do, after months of the Israeli onslaught in Gaza. But the Israelis are on high alert for attacks in the occupied West Bank or inside Israel itself.

It is important to realise that the Middle East is already in a regional war, but also to recognise that it could get much worse.

Even so, this round of killing and retaliation might not be the spark that ignites all-out war, though it is easy to construct scenarios based on the clear and dangerous risks and realities in the world’s most turbulent region.

Pulling back from the brink, repeatedly, is not making war any less likely. It makes it harder to construct a diplomatic pathway away from the looming threat of all-out conflict.

The only credible first step for lowering the deadly temperature in the Middle East is a ceasefire in Gaza.

Now a ceasefire in Gaza looks as far away as ever

In recent weeks the Americans have said that it was getting closer. That was always hard to imagine while the two sides’ definitions of an acceptable ceasefire were so far apart. For Hamas, a ceasefire meant an Israeli withdrawal and the end of hostilities. For Israel, it meant a pause that allowed for the release of some or all of the surviving hostages, and the right to resume the war afterwards.

Now a ceasefire in Gaza looks as far away as ever, although the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said again that it remains America’s diplomatic priority.

Ismail Haniyeh was a leading figure on the Hamas side in the ceasefire talks. With his colleagues, he communicated with the US and Israel via the head of the Egyptian secret service and the prime minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohamed bin Jassim al Thani.

The prime minister posted his response to the assassination of Haniyeh on X, writing: “Political assassinations and continued targeting of civilians in Gaza while talks continue leads us to ask how mediation can succeed when one party assassinates the negotiator on the other side.”

The assassination fits more closely into Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s conception of “total victory” over Hamas than into the American idea that a ceasefire is vital to avoid an even deeper regional catastrophe.

It will also strengthen the belief held by Mr Netanyahu’s critics inside and outside Israel that he wants to prolong the war, to avoid the moment when he faces a reckoning of the mistakes he made that allowed Hamas the space to attack with such devastating consequences on 7 October.

The Americans and French have also worked hard to find a diplomatic way to stop the border war between Israel and Hezbollah. But the vital first step would be a ceasefire in Gaza, and the prospect one was close has taken another hammer blow.

Israel Destroys Gaza and Palestine and Arab Leaders Lost the Future in Palestine by Dr Mahboob A Khawaja

Monsters of Histroy Defy Truth, Justice, Sanctity of Life and Earth

Horrors of insanity and Israeli war continued to plague the entire Arab region and people of Gaza and Palestine are being subjected to planned crimes against humanity and genocide without any global challenge to the catastrophic atrocities. Since May, the bogus Three-Phase so called Israeli formula for a ceasefire remains a puzzle to rational understanding. The US and Israel are forging it to ensure killing of people of Gaza and allowing new settlements by settlers to strengthen Israeli command over the West Bank and to put a finished answer to the Palestine freedom movement. All monsters of history claimed good intentions and righteous ambitions but inflicted horrors, deaths and destruction on fellow human beings to achieve individualistic ambitions of power and glory. PM Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress (July 24, 24) was no big surprise to global viewers as he acts like a despotic king for his own political survival whereas masses of Israelis view him as a liability –  a PM wanted by the ICC-ICJ for alleged “genocide”, morally and intellectually absurd person who should resign to make ways for an immediate ceasefire, return of 120 hostages and peace with Palestine.

Philip Giraldi (“War Criminal Benjamin Netanyahu Addresses the US Congress” Global Research: 7/26/24), Executive Director of the Council for the National Interest explains:Lies proliferate and Congress cheers genocide in Gaza and restates Nancy Polcy (former Speaker): “Benjamin Netanyahu’s presentation in the House Chamber today was by far the worst presentation of any foreign dignitary invited and honored with the privilege of addressing the Congress of the United States…….Netanyahu cliams ‘Hamas raped women and burnt babies alive’ but Dr. Giraldi views it a false propaganda stunt to win the US support for continued war against Palestinian people and clarifies:

The reality is, of course, it is the Jews who are killing Palestinians in large numbers using American supplied weapons. The highly respectable British medical journal The Lancet estimates that Israel has already killed more than 186,000 Palestinians since last October most of whom are still buried under the rubble of their homes, but for Netanyahu only Jewish lives matter. And the unrelenting savagery of the Israeli soldiers has also been confirmed by multiple independent sources. Bibi would also do well to read the new Knesset law passed last week that completely rejects the idea of a unilaterally declared sovereign Palestinian state side-by-side with Israel, confirming that Israel’s intentions do not include living at peace with its neighbors. https://www.globalresearch.ca/war-criminal-netanyahu-us-congress/5863708

Recently, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) put the State of Israel on notice for its illegal occupation of Palestine and settlements in West Bank and East Jerusalem as illegal and must be stopped. Jake Johnson (“ICJ Says Israel’s Occupation of Palestinian Territory Is Illegal and Must End “: Common Dreams: 7/19/24),

The United Nations’ highest court issued an advisory opinion arguing that Israel’s large-scale expansion of settlements amounts to annexation, a crime under international law.The International Court of Justice said Friday that Israel’s decadeslong occupation of Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is unlawful and must end “as rapidly as possible.” The Court in a 11-3 vote decided:

“Israel is not entitled to sovereignty in any part of the occupied Palestinian territory on account of its occupation, nor can security concerns override the prohibition on acquisition of territory by force,” said the Chief Justice.  The ICJ said that all nations “are under an obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence of the state of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory and not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the state of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory. The United States was among the countries that warned the ICJ against advising that Israel must swiftly end its occupation

Israel will not Stop at Gaza While the Arab Leaders are Just Silent Spectators

Gaza and West Bank are obliterated by Israeli insanity over ten months of continued war and bombardments of civilian infrastructures. The Arab-Muslim leaders had no mind, wisdom and courage to challenge Israel for its planned onslaught of Palestinian masses. They profess friendship with Netanyahu against Israeli animosity. The Arab leaders appear morally, intellectually and politically bankrupt as a scum floating on a torrent of naive puppets and discredited leaders. The American-Israeli collaborative war on Gaza and its immediate consequences made the Western world and all of its institutions shamefully redundant and void in the 21st century global norms of civility, human rights, freedom, justice and safety of civilians – whereas crimes against humanity are captured in obscure impulses and indecision and deliberate inaction by the UN Security Council. If Israel is not stopped, soon the leading oil exporting Arab states could fly Israeli-American flags for a change.  Please see: “Israel Lost the War and America Betrayed Humanity in Gaza.”

Those Bombing the Earth are the Enemies of Life, Peace and Humanity

The Earth is not a property of the US, West Europeans or Israel but a  Divine hub of human Life, Survival and a Trust, Those Bombing and Destroying it are mentally sick and defy the Divine Truth. It looks as if the US and Israeli leaders do not believe in life and death and accountability. The earth is living and spins at 1670 km per hour and orbits the Sun at 107,000 km per hour. Imagine, if this spinning fails, what consequences could occur to the living beings on Earth. Think again, about the average distance of earth from the moon is 93 million miles -the distance of the Moon from Earth is currently 384,821 km equivalent to 0.002572 Astronomical Units. Earth is a “trust” to mankind for its existence, sustenance of life, survival, progress and future-making. The Earth exists and floats without any pillars in a capsule by the Will of God, so, ”Fear God Who created life and death.” Is human intelligence still intact to understand this reality? Wherever there is a trust, there is accountability. All human beings are accountable for their actions. The Divine warning (Chapter 7: 56: The Quran), warns: Do no mischief on the Earth after it hath been set in order, but call on God with fear and longing in hearts; For the Mercy of God is always near to those who do good. (44:38-39.The Divine Message  (Quran:40:64),clarifies:

It is God Who made for you the Earth as a resting place and the sky as a canopy; And has given you shape and made your shapes beautiful, And has provided for your Sustenance, of things pure and good; Such is God your Lord. So Glory to God, The Lord of the Worlds.

And killing of innocent people is prohibited in the Ten Commandments (Torah):

‘Thou shalt not kill’ (Exod. 20:13; also Deut. 5:17). Jewish law views the shedding of innocent blood very seriously, and lists murder as one of three sins (along with idolatry and sexual immorality), that fall under the category of yehareg ve’al ya’avor – meaning “One should let himself be killed rather than violate it.

“Phase One of Israel’s genocidal campaign on Gaza has ended. Phase Two has begun. It will result in even higher levels of death and destruction” reports Chris Hedges.

Chris Hedges “Israel Reopens the Gaza Slaughterhouse.” Chris Hedges Report: 12/05/23

This is not a war against Hamas. It is a war against Palestinians.

Israeli strikes are generated at a dizzying rate, many of them from a system called “Habsora” — The Gospel — which is built on artificial intelligence that selects 100 targets a day. The AI-system is described by seven current and former Israeli intelligence officials in an article by Yuval Abraham on the Israeli sites +972 Magazine and Local Call, as facilitating a “mass assassination factory.” Israel, once it locates what it assumes to be a Hamas operative from a cell phone, for example, bombs and shells a wide area around the target, killing and wounding tens, and at times hundreds of Palestinians, the article states.

Dr. Mahboob A. Khawaja specializes in international affairs-global security, peace and conflict resolution and has spent several academic years across the Russian-Ukrainian and Central Asian regions knowing the people, diverse cultures of thinking and political governance and a keen interest in Islamic-Western comparative cultures and civilizations, and author of several publications including: One Humanity and the Remaking of Global Peace, Security and Conflict Resolution, and a forthcoming book: Global Humanity and the Remaking of Peace, Security and Conflict Resolution beyond the Lens of Human Consciousness.

India: Should Government Employees be allowed to Join RSS?

Should Government Employees be allowed to Join RSS?

Ram Puniyani

RSS is the biggest organization in the World. It aims at working for Hindu Rashtra and also claims that it is a Cultural Organization. It is as such striving for Nationalism (Hindu)’ contrary to the one underlined in our Constitution, Indian Nationalism. It regards Hindus as a Nation and so it has set its goal. Times and over again one or the other top leader of BJP voices the demand for scrapping the Indian Constitution and proclaiming that we should become a Hindu Rashtra. RSS Sarsanghchalak K. Sudarshan himself had stated this when became chief of RSS in 2000. Prior to 2024 elections BJP President J.P. Nadda stated that now BJP is more capable and does not need RSS support for its electoral campaign which was the norm in previous elections. What does the pledge and prayer of RSS tell about its goal?

Its role in shaping BJP, its political progeny, can easily be discerned from the writings and actions of RSS. One recalls that it was Shyama Prasad Mukherjee of Hindu Mahasabha, who collaborated with RSS to float the previous avatar of BJP, Bhartiya Jansangh. The then RSS chief M.S. Golwalkar,(Guruji) regarded as the major ideologue of RSS; time and again outlined the role of RSS trained Swayamsaevaks and Pracharaks, while being in Jana Sangh or BJP.

Golwalkar writes “For instance some of our friends were told to go and work for politics that does not mean that they have great interest or inspiration for it. They don’t die for politics like fish without water. If they are told to withdraw from politics, then also there is no objection. Their discretion is just not required.” (Golwalkar, MS, Shri Guruji Samagar Darshan (collected works of Golwalkar in Hindi, Bhartiya Vichar Sadhna, Nagpur, vol. 3, p. 33) tells us clearly that Jansangh or BJP was supposed to follow the instructions of RSS.

Further Guruji says, We know this also that some of our Swayamsevaks [cadres] work in politics. There they have to organize according to the needs of work: public meetings, processions etc., have to raise slogans. (Same as above Vol 4, page 4-5)

RSS nurtured and trained its swayamsevaks on these lines and later floated many organizations. Nathuram Godse the killer of Mahatma Gandhi was also a trained pracharak of RSS. RSS at that time did not keep any records of membership so it could wash its hands off from this murder. Nathuram Godse's family believes that the assassin, a staunch member of the RSS was neither expelled from the sangh nor did he ever leave the organization.

Shamsul Islam, eminent scholar of Hindu Nationalism, points out, “The central publication house of the RSS, the Suruchi Prakashan, Jhandewalan, New Delhi, published, Param Vaibhav Ke Path Par (1997) which gave details of more than 40 organizations created by the RSS for different tasks. The BJP as a political organization figures prominently in it at number 3, with the ABVP, Hindu Jagaran Manch, Vishva Hindu Parishad, Swadeshi Jagaran Manch and Sanskar Bharti etc.)

Similarly the prayer and pledge of RSS make it clear that they make its followers commit to Hindu nation. Its Prathana (Prayer) says “You/O God almighty, we the integral part of the Hindu Rashtra salute you in reverence/For Your cause have we girded up our loins/Give us Your Blessings for its accomplishment.  (RSS, Shakha Darshika, Gyan Ganga, Jaipur, 1997, p.1) The pledge is also equally forthright in this “I become a member of the RSS in order to achieve all round greatness of Bharatvarsha by fostering the growth of my sacred Hindu religion, Hindu society, and Hindu culture. (page 66 above)

The masquerading of RSS as a cultural organization does help it to expand by appealing to the emotions of many. Major leaders of the freedom struggle were very clear about the nature of RSS. “A member of Gandhi’s entourage had praised the efficiency, discipline, courage and capacity for hard work shown by RSS cadres at Wagah, a major transit camp for Punjab refugees. Gandhi quipped back, ‘but don’t forget, even so had Hitler’s Nazis and Fascists under Mussolini’, Gandhi characterized RSS as a communal body with a totalitarian outlook’ (Pyarelal, Mahatma Gandhi: The Last Phase, Ahmedabad, page 440)

Nehru did regard RSS as having traits of fascism. Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, had stated that “The RSS is strictly secret as regards its organization. It has consequently developed along fascist lines and is definitely a potential menace to public peace. (Dr. Rajendra Prasad to Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, 12 December 1948)

Sardar Patel  wrote “As regards the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha, the case relating to Gandhiji’s murder… about the participation of the two organizations, but our reports do confirm that, as a result of the activities of these two bodies, particularly the former, an atmosphere was created in the country in which such a ghastly tragedy became possible… The activities of the RSS constituted a clear threat to the existence of the Government and the State. Our reports show that those activities, despite the ban, have not died down. Indeed, as time has marched on, the RSS circles are becoming more defiant and are indulging in their subversive activities in an increasing measure.

[Letter 64 cited in Sardar Patel: Select Correspondence19450-1950, vol. 2, Navjivan Publishing House, Ahmadabad, 1977, pp. 276-277.]

We also recall that RSS has been banned thrice, and wriggled out of those bans by wearing the façade of Culture. As we know the ban on Government servants taking part in politics is to ensure that our bureaucracy remains committed to the values of the constitution and not be politically partisan. This ban on Government servants participating in RSS activities has been there for over 50 years. It is the third time that this was done.

In between Janata Party and Atal Bihari Vajpayee were also at the helm of political affairs but this ban was not lifted. Mr. Modi has been in power for the last 10+ years. Why is he taking this decision now? Is it after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has been making oblique criticism of the supreme leader? There is a need for cultural activists and social scientists to assess the contribution of RSS to Indian culture. This mask of RSS being a cultural organization needs to be undone and its political agenda grasped for protection of Indian Constitution and democracy. As such it seems that it is a Supra-political outfit.

McDonald’s CEO says Muslims’ Gaza boycott hurt quarterly sales

A boycott sparked by the war in Gaza helped contribute to McDonald’s first quarterly decline in same-store sales since the COVID outbreak in early 2020.

On Monday, the fast-food company known for its hamburgers and french fries reported a 1% decline in revenue across all its businesses. But the company pinned the blame on disproportionately lower demand abroad and especially in France, Europe’s third-largest economy behind Germany and the U.K.

Answering an analyst question during an investor call, CEO Chris Kempczinski addressed concerns over specific regional weakness cited in its earnings report. While China suffered from overall weak consumer sentiment, for example, France was more complicated, in his view.

He cited three issues that needed to be tackled to claw back share: The first was an aggressive rival that was competing on price. The second was the return of the €4 Happy Meal ($4.33) to attract the key family demographic as well as a third: its brand positioning.

The problem was that “France is one of the markets that has a higher Muslim population,” Kempczinski said. “And so when you think about the Middle East, the impact that we’re seeing in France has been more than maybe in other markets because of that population.”

“So there’s a lot that the team is looking at doing on, ‘How do we make sure we’re telling our story from a marketing standpoint at the local level?’” he said.

Fortune reached out to McDonald’s for further comment or clarification, but could not immediately reach a company official authorized to speak on its behalf.

France has one of the highest Muslim populations in Europe.

McDonald’s added that international sales in emerging markets saw the biggest percentage decline, at 1.3%, the result of both the war in Gaza as well as declines in China. By comparison, its domestic U.S. market suffered only a 0.7% decrease in like-for-like revenue as price hikes could not offset lower foot traffic.

It is not just lost turnover that threatens McDonald’s. The chain said that it will continue to provide assistance to its franchisees for the duration of the conflict in Gaza. This includes royalty relief and/or the deferral of cash collection for certain business owners in the Middle East, although the company characterized it as an “immaterial” amount.

“The company is monitoring the evolving situation, which it expects to continue to have a negative impact on systemwide sales and revenue as long as the war continues,” it said in its 8-K regulatory filing on Monday.

The owner of McDonald’s Israeli franchisee, Omri Padan, had sparked the boycott after offering thousands of free meals to soldiers in Israel’s military conducting operations in Gaza in the days following the Oct. 7 terror attacks by Hamas.

‘Feeling the BDS heat’

The national committee of Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS), a nonviolent movement aimed at pressuring Israel over its treatment of Palestinians, thereupon called on consumers worldwide to avoid dining at the fast-food chain. Some lawmakers in the U.S., the U.K., and Israel have accused the group of anti-Semitism, which it denies.

Kempczinski has argued the loss of business is the result of “misinformation” affecting a number of brands and which he called “disheartening and ill-founded,” adding the chain was proud to be represented by owner-operators supporting their local communities, including in Muslim ones.

“McDonald’s is now really feeling the BDS heat,” said Omar Barghouti, cofounder of the movement, in a statement to Fortune on Tuesday. “Its share price is rapidly declining, and its sales are falling globally, mainly due to the worldwide #BoycottMcDonalds campaign that we launched late last year.”

The stock has lost nearly 11% of its value since the start of January, heavily underperforming the 15% gain in the broader S&P 500 index.

In January, Kempczinski described Padan’s actions as having a “meaningful business impact.”

Four months later, McDonald’s said it had struck a deal with the CEO and owner of Alonyal Limited to acquire all 225 restaurants in Israel along with its more than 5,000 employees. It did not cite the reason for the unusual deal.

“We thank Alonyal Limited for building the McDonald’s business and brand in Israel over the past 30 years,” Jo Sempels, president of international developmental licensed markets at the Fortune 500 company, said at the time. He added his company remained committed to the Israeli market.

The deal is unusual given the chain is overwhelmingly dependent on third parties. According to McDonald’s, franchisees operate roughly 95% of its over 40,000 stores across 100 countries worldwide.

Licensing out its stores is also highly profitable compared with owning them: The bulk of all operating costs are borne by franchisees, who also pay a royalty to the multinational corporation based on a percentage of sales.

BDS has said it aims to maintain the boycott until headquarters severs all ties with Padan’s company, Alonyal Limited.

“McDonald’s is now realizing the steep price of accountability,” Barghouti said.

Arakan Army pushes Myanmar's military to brink in monsoon war

BANGKOK -- The Arakan Army (AA), an armed ethnic group in Myanmar, is taking advantage of the monsoon rains sweeping across the country to intensify its offensive against the military regime's troops in Rakhine state, located along the country's western coast and bordering Bangladesh.

The AA attributes its tightening its grip on the muddy, rugged terrain, following battle plans using both guerilla tactics typically favored by rebel armies and conventional military operations -- as it targets long-held military outposts, border camps and heavily fortified operational commands that have been pivotal for the military regime to assert its authority.

"We are mainly deploying insurgent tactics, in combination with some characteristics of conventional warfare," the media team of the AA and its political wing, the United League of Arakan (ULA), told Nikkei Asia in an exclusive interview from its headquarters on condition that it be identified only with its initials, AA and ULA.

"[When] we approach the enemy's military stations near the towns, we have to set up some kind of fixed positions to besiege and surround their military positions."

The effectiveness of that tactic is reflected in the AA's recent successes following a monthslong offensive to gain control of Nagpali, a popular beach strip in the Rakhine state where Myanmar's generals and their business cronies own villas and resorts, and the surrounding area. It also captured the headquarters of an infantry battalion, according to reports from Myanmar's media.

The shifting weather conditions, according to the AA, were included in the battle plans for its forces to gain complete control of Rakhine state, which is also called Arakan state, explaining the ferocity of the current campaign taking place under gray monsoon skies. It is a different environment from the two previous monsoon battles since the military takeover in February 2021 that brought the State Administrative Council -- the official name of the military regime -- to power.

"We prepared to better use the changing weather [during] the monsoon," the AA/ULA said. "[Because we could] also face ... deployment issues during the rainy season and [a] challenge to target drone strikes over [the] enemy's position."

Seasoned Myanmar political observers like David Scott Mathieson, an independent analyst, say the battles during this year's monsoon war are an escalation from the two previous rainy seasons, which begin around June and taper off by September. "This round of fighting since November last year is really a 'cold' season, then summer, and now [a] monsoon multiseasonal offensive," added Mathieson, who has authored multiple reports on the country's ethnic armed forces. "It is the most intensive since the AA was formed."

The AA, which emerged in 2009, officially claims to have around "40,000 standing troops, excluding several thousand auxiliary members." Such numbers have made the AA "the largest de-facto state-armed organization in Myanmar based on manpower," according to the AA/ULA.

While some Southeast Asian military intelligence operatives following the civil war in Myanmar raise questions about the accuracy of AA's troop numbers, they concede that the ethno-nationalist group's multipronged attacks have pushed Myanmar regime troops to the wall. Among the AA's military prizes is the vanquishing of two of the three Military Operations Commands (MOCs), which are well-armed, division-size strategic bases of Myanmar's military, in Rakhine state.

A woman walks past her temporary house on May 21, following fighting between Myanmar's military and the Arakan Army ethnic minority armed group in a village in western Rakhine state.   © AFP/Jiji

"Our troops have already captured two MOCs in Rakhine state ... and are in military confrontation with forces from MOC-5 (the third such command)," said the AA/ULA. "We have [also] defeated [troops from three light infantry divisions] in several armed zones."

According to Mathieson, the AA has "played it pretty smart in terms of military operations," with the targeting of the MOCs as part of its broader campaign to achieve strategic and symbolic gains. "Its strategy is to take over all the towns in the Rakhine state," he said.

A clutch of reports monitoring the Myanmar regime's weakening grip in a state that has been economically marginalized and a rural backwater affirm that over half of Rakhine state's townships have fallen under the AA's control.

The current conflict in this state marks a new chapter in a corner of Myanmar that still bears scars of the "textbook example of ethnic cleansing," as described by a U.N. official in 2017, when Myanmar troops unleashed waves of attacks against the unarmed Muslim minority Rohingya.

A May report by the Special Advisory Council for Myanmar, an independent group of international human rights experts, revealed that the Myanmar regime had lost complete control over townships covering 86% of the country's territory and 67% of its people. "The overall trajectory of the conflict in Myanmar since 2022 has been one of expanding resistance control, versus corresponding military junta losses," said the council. "That trajectory has been consistent and escalated rapidly from October 2023."

But the civil war pitting regime troops against an array of ethnic armed organizations on the border, and clashes with the newly-formed armed wing of the National Unity Government, the anti-regime political opposition, in central Myanmar, has exacted a heavy toll. A total of 5,161 civilians have been killed since the generals seized power in 2021, according to the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners, a Myanmar human rights group. The U.N. has also raised the alarm, saying more than 3 million people have been displaced because of the conflict.

And a reprieve appears unlikely as the generals are deploying a fresh crop of conscripts, who were rushed through their military training, to reinforce troops in the besieged camps in Rakhine state. But that has not prompted the AA to change its tune.

"It is true that the SAC has been reinforcing more troops and military ammunition these days, especially into its military bases in ... Sittwe," the AA/ULA said, referring to the capital of Rakhine. But the group added that its progress is "in line with our military objectives ... to eradicate all SAC forces across Arakan."
