That is, I was born into a family of Buddhists in Myanmar, considered a major center of Theravada Buddhism, a sect, that considers itself closer to the original practice that existed at the time of the Buddha, or the Enlightened One.
Born out of the Northern part of the Indian sub-continent where Hinduism was one of the oldest and most dominant spiritual tradition, Buddhism is really an antethesis of Hindusim, and has absolutely nothing to do with the polytheism, that is, belief and worship of multiple Gods.

The greatest paradox of Buddhism as a philo-spiritual paradigm or “faith”, if you like, begins with the term Buddha or “the Enlightened One”. THE foundation of the paradigm is the complete and utter rejection of “Self”, as we know it. The singularly most important question arises, when the term such as “the Buddha” or “the Enlightened One” is used as part of a normal communicative act.
If there is no “Self”, in this human world, how is it possible for the emergence, beginning and end of the existence of “The Enlightened One”?
Take this line of questioning to the next level.
Why is their Sangha, or the Order of saffron-robed disciples of that “Enlightened One”? Who are they, if they cannot conceivably be a collection of “None Selves?
A Buddhist kingdom? A Buddhist empire? A Buddhist nation? A Buddhist state?
The corrutions, manipulations and the misuses of a None-Self doctrine have WMD-like devastating consquences.

I have long and repeatedly tried to explain why Buddhists kill long before Myanmar genocide hit international news headlines and the state itself was hauled by a tiny African state of Gambia before the International Court of Justice.
Let me make a startling and perhaps outrageous observation based on my several decades years of research on my own country’s affairs:
my fellow Buddhists in Myanmar who cheered on or partook in the political state’s genocide of Rohingyas would not be recognized as adherents of Buddhism were the Master Teacher, Buddha, saw them today.
They ain’t fuckin’ Buddhists. Not in the way I understand Buddhism, theoretically, philosophically and spiritually. Conceptually and philosophically, there is absolutely no thing as “a Buddhist kingdom” or “a Buddhist Empire”, “a Buddhist theocratic state” (ala Tibet or Bhutan), or “a Buddhist political state”.
The predominantly Buddhist Myanmar is a society which I loved dearly.
Because the level of toxic Islampophobia and the cultural turn towards blood-based identity had become too extreme, so much so that I self-consciously and publicly renounced my Buddhist, Bama identity, something I held on so tightly as my ideological fortress as an exile for nearly four decades.

I’d rather live and die a generic human, than stay coiled up in my Pavlovian identity as a genocidal Buddhist, like a venomous viper in my old town of tropical Mandalay.
I need a passport or a refugee travel document for practical purposes of life. But I do NOT need to belong, especially any social groupings whose values I totally reject, be their colonials or my own fellow Myanmar.
Now look West of Myanmar to the present-day post-colonial nation-state of India, with its Hinduvta political doctrine, wrapped in the polytheistic Hinduism.
Incidentally, India, like Burma, next door, was a state that was birthed as a result of the British Raj’s disintergation, thanks to its imperial overreach. Its national emblem is the lion-crested Emperor Ashok or Asoka of BC 300, who is best known for his propagation of Buddhism, himself a contemporary with or only slightly junior to, the Macedonian Alexandra the Great.
The two states, with their predominant Buddhist and Hindu faiths, cannot be more different from each other. Irrespective of faiths, the Indian society (and for that matter, the Muslim Pakistan to its north and northwest) rests on the deeply criminal caste system whereby large human populations are trapped in various stations in the minutely detailed societal pyramids. In sharp contrast, Myanmar with its predominant Buddhism is relatively far more egalitarian in terms of social hiearchy and gender.
Differences in the nature of the respective faiths and society, both Myanmar and India are genocidal places.
Myanmar has already commissioned the crime of genocide, a crime the states and different regimes since the mid-1970’s, have put on autopilot. My wife and scholar colleage Natalie and I call this Myanmar genocide of Rohingyas, a slow-burning genocide, guided by the twin-ideology of anti-immigration and Islamophobia.
India, with the world’s largest pocket of Muslim population, has not undertaken this genocidal step towards non-Hindu communities, including Muslims and Christians whom India’s Hindutva ideologues see as a threat to their Hindu nation.
But Hinduvta India is pregnant with genocide of non-Hindua faith-based communities.
A small number of Buddhists among Indians and Buddhists in the neighborgoods are seen favorably vis-a-vis Christians and Muslims. For Buddhism is India-rooted while Christianity and Islam have their Abrahimic root in West Asia (or Palestine).

In Palestine itself which was partititioned in 1947 by the then US-UK-controlled United Nations, for the purpose of creating the national homeland, a new nation-state, on the soil of the overwhelmingly multi-faith indigenous Arab peoples.
According to the Israeli Jewish historian and activist, the University of Exeter Professor Ilan Pappe, this was a deeply bigoted move by the victorious Allied Powers to dump Christian Europe’s “unwanted Jews”. In places like Krakow, Poland, with its pre-Holocaust population of 70,000 Polish Jews, after Auschwitz - about 68 kilometer away - less than 2,000 Polish Jews returned to live, according to my sociologist guide from the Galacia Jewish Museum there (Most were “liquidated” during the Nazi-occupation of Poland).
Amidst the Cold War and in an era of de-colonizing nation states embracing anti-Capitalist national economic policies and pan-Arabic or pan-regional secularlist identities, the very European states led by the United States have sowed the seeds of political Islam or radical Islamic ideologies. For the #1 imperialist power of the Western Bloc, namely the United States, found it strategically invalable to support, fund and promote very toxic readings of different faiths as a bulwak against the tide of secularist leftist idelogies and policies that initially drew inspirations from the Soviet Union and forged its third way as “non-aligned” movement.
Over the ensuing decades after the occupation of the UN-recognized geographically contaguous Palestine (the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza) in 1967, via the war of choice designed to expand its territories, the State of Israel has been steadily moving in the direction of what the Lithuanian Jewish Israeli scholar the late Leibowitz termed “Judeo-Nazism”.
Illan Pappe, Gideon Levy, Avi Shlaim and the younger generation of Israeli scholars and intelelctuals too recognize the post-1967 war ideological movement among both Israeli power holders and the state and its organs including its armed forces (Israeli Defence Force) as “messianic Jewish Fascist.”
Avigail Abarbanel, a former Israeli psychologist, who renounced her Jewish identity, warned that Netanyahu and Israeli Jewish Fascists may be planning to blow up Al-Aqsa Mosque (photo by Zarni, Jan. 2025), the 3rd holiest site in Islam, in order to build their 3rd Temple, with the support of fanatical Christian Zionists. Inside the vast Al- Aqsa mosque, that is, the compound as well as the the two places of worships, I have seen Zionist Jewish tourisists walking in tour groups, holding the print-outs of what is supposed to be the blue-print of the Second Temple.
All these faith-based movements - anchored in some form of racial or blood-based ideologies - have become rather destablising in many political states or civilizational or cultural regions, from Latin America to USA and Canada, from the continental Europe to post-Brexit United Kingdom, to South and South East Asian states such as India and Myanmar.

In the following video (11 minutes in total), an American socilogist explained the findings of his research based on the poll among 20,000+ Americans regarding the alarming rise and governmental penetration of Christian nationalism, which is organically tied the notion of White Supremacy among the Americans and the belief in (the genocidal) Manifest Destiny (that, God promised USA to protestant Christian migrants from Europe vis-a-vis the “savages” that were native to the land when destitute and religiously fanatical Puritans arrived from England in the early 17th century).
