Congress Must Act After Leaked Image Shows Elderly Palestinian Men Before Execution by Israeli Forces in Gaza

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Congress to immediately suspend U.S. military aid to Israel in response to a newly-leaked image of elderly Palestinians who were reportedly used as human shields by Israeli forces in Gaza and then executed.

In a statement, Washington, D.C.-based CAIR said:

“These elderly Palestinian men were reportedly used as human shields by Israeli occupation forces in Gaza and then executed after they had served their purpose. The image documenting their final moments should shock the conscience of every member of Congress. These were human beings who deserved protection, not execution.

“Congress cannot continue writing blank checks for a military force facing repeated reports of crimes against humanity. American taxpayers should not be financing weapons that may be used to facilitate genocide.

“Silence is not neutrality when American weapons and money are involved. Every member of Congress has a responsibility to demand accountability and to ensure that U.S. foreign policy does not make our government complicit in the killing, ethnic cleansing and abuse of Palestinian civilians.”

Last week, CAIR renewed its call on members of Congress to demand Israel immediately release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya from detention after reports that the torture he endured at the hands of his Israeli captors left him with broken ribs.

CAIR also said that a mass funeral for civilians slaughtered by Israel in Gaza further exposes the Israeli government’s ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people and underscores the urgent need for international action to halt Israel’s killing, dispossession and destruction. The Muslim civil rights organization previously called on members of Congress to condemn Israel’s recent slaughter of children in Gaza.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
