Press Release from ARNO

Press release 23, May 2019 STOP ARMY BRUTALITIES IN ARAKAN
Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) expresses its deep concern over the Myanmar military’s violence and brutalities against the civilian population in Arakan/Rakhine State and demands to immediately stop all human rights violations and crimes against humanity.

Under the pretext of looking for Arakan Army (AA), the Myanmar brute forces have created a hellish situation all over Arakan in violation of the international humanitarian law. Arbitrary Arrest and detention, extra-judicial killing, sexual abuse, involuntary disappearance, destruction of homes and properties, no media access and blockading of humanitarian assistance to the needy, have been regular phenomenon creating refugee influx across the border to Bangladesh and internally displaced. ARNO strongly condemns such barbarism of the Myanmar military.

The successive Myanmar civil and military leaders had carried out mass atrocity crimes against the Rohingya population where the extremist Rakhine politicians, academics and settler villagers astonishingly served as instruments. The worst comes to the worst, during the time of Army Chief Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, when in 2017, the world was shocked by the images of hundreds and thousands of innocent Rohingya men, women and children fleeing mass atrocities and genocide in Arakan. Families were massacred, hundreds of villages scorched, thousands of houses burned to the ground, women gangraped, babies thrown into the flame, forcing about 800,000 survivors to take refuge in neighbouring Bangladesh constituting regional instability and a threat to international peace and security.

Now the same brute forces are carrying out crimes against humanity and war crimes against the innocent Rakhine civilians. Round the clock the two communities of Rohingya and Rakhine are living in horror and terror in Arakan. The government and its military are treating them degradingly like a colonizer. To serve their own selfish ends, foreign corporates and companies have been allowed to exploit Arakan’s rich natural resources without informed consent of its people, who have been subjected to grinding poverty.  It is unjustified and unethical behaviour that the greedy exploiters are now trying to create so-called special economic zones particularly in Northern Arakan on the abandoned or destroyed land and settlements of the Rohingya people.

Throughout the history the two sister communities of Rohingya and Rakhine had lived in perfect amity and contributed together for the development and wellbeing of their land and people.  It is time for rapprochement and cooperation between our two sister communities and bury all differences in order to face the challenges and overcome the terrible situation. We urge both communities to work in unison without distinction as to race, religion and status in order to charter the future of our people.
