MERHROM WELCOMES THE MOVE BY THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT AND SUHAKAM TO INVESTIGATE THE INCIDENT OF ROHINGYA FLEEING SUNGAI BAKAP DETENTION CAMP.
Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organization in Malaysia (MERHROM) is saddened by the fatal accident involving 6 Rohingya who escaped from the Sungai Bakap temporary detention camp on 20th April 2022 at 4.30am.
We were saddened this tragedy happened in the holy month of Ramadan. It is heartbreaking to see how they died, especially the children. Though we do not know exactly what triggered them to escape the detention camp, we believe a long detention led them to flee the detention camp. Being the genocide surviviors, the Rohingya suffered from trauma and other psychological problem and most of the time untreated.
We welcome the move by the Malaysian government to conduct thorough investigation into the incident. We also welcome the move by SUHAKAM to send a team to the detention camp to probe the incident. As pointed out by SUHAKAM Commissioner Jerald Joseph, the Rohingya were stateless and therefore, cannot be returned to Myanmar. Therefore, it lies with UNHCR and the resettlement countries to provide protection and a durable solution for the Rohingya in accordance with international law. Indefinite detention will definitely affect their mental health as victims of genocide. As a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, we humbly request the Malaysian government to allow UNHCR access to the detainees. We hope the Malaysian government, SUHAKAM and UNHCR will sit together to find a durable solution for the Rohingya.
We call upon the UNHCR to find durable solution for the Rohingya until the United Nations and the international community stop the Rohingya Genocide. The ongoing Rohingya Genocide in Myanmar had force the Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh. The dire conditions in the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps in addition to the various security problems in the camps had forced the Rohingya to seek refuge in other Southeast Asian countries as well as Pakistan, India and Saudi Arabia. Many have lost their lives while seeking refuge including in the hands of human traffickers.
To date the Myanmar situation has not changed. This forced the people of Myanmar including the Rohingya to constantly flee to the neighboring countries to seek refuge. Therefore, the international pressure to Myanmar is very crucial in order to stop the Rohingya Genocide and to restore democracy in Myanmar in order to save the lives of civilian. The failure of doing this resulted in the deaths of many innocent lives including women and children as to what had happened recently where 6 Rohingya died while crossing a highway after they fled the detention camp here yesterday.
