It has been reported that many Rohingya youths, as well as elderly individuals, from the villages of Kyaw Hle Kha and Mingalar Gyi in northern Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, Myanmar, have been compelled to perform forced labor by members of the Arakan Army (AA).
Since October 21, members of the Arakan Army (AA) have been forcing Rohingya residents from Kyaw Hle Kha and Mingalar Gyi villages into forced labor.
“The Rohingya villagers are forcibly taken and made to clear landmines around the only remaining Battalion 05 in Maungdaw and Gyi Ken Pyin village in northern Maungdaw Township,” a source reported.
According to the source, “50 Rohingyas from Kyaw Hle Kha village and 85 Rohingyas from Mingalar Gyi village in northern Maungdaw are being forcibly taken around the remaining Military Council's Battalion No. 05 and Gyi Ken Pyin village, where they are made to clear landmines planted by the Military Council.”
The source added, “50 people from Kyaw Hle Kha village and 85 people from Mingalar Gyi village are being taken for six days and are daily forced to clear landmines around the Military Council's battalion. They are only provided with one meal per day and are allowed to return to their families after six consecutive days of labor.”
The Arakan Army (AA) has threatened villagers, stating that anyone who refuses to work will be “brutally punished, with strong action taken against them at our discretion.” They have also intimidated villagers by showing guns and threatening to shoot or detain anyone who refuses to work as laborers.
Those who are forcibly taken for labor face constant danger, as they are made to clear landmines planted by the Military Council. There is a significant risk of losing their lives while clearing landmines on roads and in various locations around Battalion 05 (Nakhaka 05).
