‘Identify backers of Myanmar’s crackdown on Rohingyas’

The countries involved in “dirty politics” and backing Myanmar’s crackdown on Rohingyas should be identified to resolve such migration crisis, said an international affairs expert yesterday.

“Experiencing genocide in Myanmar, hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas fled to at least 19 countries in the world, especially in southeast Asia, so a greater international assistance is needed to address their miserable condition,” said Prof Imtiaz Ahmed of Dhaka University’s International Relations department.
He was addressing a seminar titled “Global Migration Crisis: Religion, Society and the State” organsied by Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue at RC Majumder auditorium at DU.
Bangladesh is hosting over 1.1 million Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, most of whom arrived here since August 25, 2017.
Prof Imtiaz, also director at Centre for Genocide Studies at DU, said Bangladesh has set an example for the world with its response to the Rohingya crisis.
“We can feel their pain and could not say no to them [Rohingyas] as we were victims of genocide in 1971 and forced to take shelter in India,” he said.
Citing the country’s success in controlling terrorism according to the 2018 Global Terrorism Index, he said that Bangladesh ranks at number 25 among 163 countries, faring better than India and the USA.
Addressing the programme, Prof Salimullah Khan of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, blamed “racism” for unleashing global migration crisis.
“If you change your religion, you can be a Muslim, Christian or others but you have no way to change your skin colour to be a white British or American, that’s the reason why some developed countries are involved in racial discrimination,” he said.
He urged all to uphold values of humanity instead of racial or religious discrimination.
Dr Fazrin Huda, director of the university‘s centre, chaired the seminar.
