Dear Mr. & Mrs. Gates
As one of the world’s foremost philanthropic organizations, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sets the moral tone for the global humanitarian community. That is why we, the undersigned, are deeply disappointed with the recent decision of the Gates Foundation to bestow one of its prestigious awards upon the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
While we understand the award was given for the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan program, which is aimed at building toilets in India where about 500 million people defecate in public, it nevertheless seems inconsistent to give a humanitarian award to a man whose nickname is the “Butcher of Gujarat.”
The award could not have come at a more awkward time. Genocide Watch has issued a genocide warning for the Indian held Kashmir and the Indian state of Assam. In Kashmir, more than 800,000 Indian armed forces have kept eight million Kashmiris detained in their own homes without phones or internet service for the last month, canceled school for students and are blinding protesters with pellet guns. In Assam, 1.9 million Bengali speaking Muslims have been stripped of their citizenship while Hindus are told not to worry about losing their citizenship.
Since the Bharatiya Janta Party, Modi’s party came to power in 2014, the use of organized mobs and militias have undermined the rule of law so frequently that the Indian Supreme Court warned that these “horrendous acts of mobocracy cannot be permitted to inundate the law of the land.”
Is this the kind of record that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation wishes to endorse? We can only assume that the Foundation would not have made this decision had it fully considered the facts. Please: we ask that you reconsider your decision and rescind the award.
Narendra Modi does not deserve it, and to have awarded him is beneath the dignity and moral stature of your Foundation.
