Appeal from Justice for all: In and Out of Prison for 34 years, Never Convicted Of A Crime The Nelson Mandela of Kashmir

 

I want to make a personal appeal to you. In the name of Allah. To the followers of Muhammad and to the followers of Jesus. God’s peace and blessing be upon them. It is about a Kashmiri young woman. Her father has never been convicted of any crime. But he is spending his 34th year in prison. That is more time than Nelson Mandela.  Her father’s name is Shabir Shah. After three years, India finally allowed her to visit him in jail. But within 5 minutes the jailers stopped the meeting, asking her and her mother to leave. The last image scorched on her heart was a glimpse of her lionhearted father through the small glass window: he was being dragged by 3 jailers since he was unable to walk. Amnesty designated Shabir Shah a “Prisoner of Conscience” in 1992. But Shabir Shah, a human rights activist, is still in prison. Although he has never been convicted of any crimes in 34 years, his real crime is well-known: He has been peacefully asking the United Nations for the right to self-determination for his people, the Kashmiris. Her mother, who is a physician, says Shabir Shah has a lethal mix of diseases: diabetes, heart, and kidney problems. He must see medical experts right away. His life is at risk. Many Indian prisoners have died in the crowded prisons during the pandemic. He was never convicted of any crime. But was detained time and time again. I grew up mostly without my father, so I know her pain. Her plea for help is opening my wounds, which I rarely talk about.
