The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), its Florida chapter (CAIR-FL), and the Internationalist Law Center today condemned the arrest of human rights attorney Noura Erakat after she spoke against Israel bonds at a public budget hearing Palm Beach County, Florida.
Erakat was detained by police after speaking at the hearing as more than 100 residents attended to speak against the county’s proposed $1 billion investment in Israel bonds. During the hearing, a commissioner also told a protesting veteran that he was an “embarrassment” to his uniform.

In a statement, CAIR-FL Communications Director Wilfredo Amr Ruiz said:
“Noura Erakat was arrested unjustly for speaking out against a horrific policy. Palm Beach County commissioners must immediately stop using more than a billion dollars in public taxpayer funds to bankroll death, enable war crimes, and finance the slaughter of innocent children. Dumping our community’s hard-earned resources into these toxic, high-risk Israeli bonds makes our local government directly complicit in catastrophic human suffering. We demand our elected officials divest without delay, prioritize our residents’ needs at home, and refuse to let our tax dollars underwrite atrocities abroad.”
CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“Funneling over a billion dollars taken from the American people is an egregious outrage that should be condemned by all Americans. Noura Erakat bravely opposed this investment of the American peoples’ money in genocide and war crimes and was arrested for it. We stand in full solidarity with her and encourage elected officials nationwide to do the same and to condemn both her unjust arrest and Palm Beach County’s investment in the genocidal Israeli government. American money is for the American people, not for a foreign, criminal rogue state.”
