A stark disparity in the latest government recruitment in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir has raised fresh concerns over the marginalization of Muslims from the Kashmir Valley. Of 55 officers selected for the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service and J&K Accounts (Gazetted) Service, only 10 are from the Kashmir Valley — about 18% of the total.
The Valley, which is overwhelmingly Muslim, accounts for approximately 56% of Jammu and Kashmir’s population. The figures mean its representation in the recruitment is less than one-third of its population share. Experts link the disparity to Indian systematic attempt at weakening Kashmiri Muslims in their socioeconomic reality.
Even proposed changes to the reservation framework would increase the Valley’s representation to only about 19%, still far below its 56% population share.
