Running scared of the Roaches

The controversy over alleged anomalies in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which has been simmering for months, has now fuelled widespread protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over his alleged role in the mass deletion of crores of voter names from the rolls.

Following back-to-back arrests of leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over protests in the national capital on the issue, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke was granted conditional bail on October 17 after he submitted a peace bond with an undertaking to maintain peace without disrupting public order, while fellow CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were sent to five days’ judicial custody on October 14.

Ranka and Das were arrested on October 14 while protesting against the government’s decision the day before to denotify Jantar Mantar as a protest site, while the police detained Dipke on October 16, hours before the CJP’s proposed Tiranga March at Connaught Place on the same day.
