Charlie Hebdo does it again!

Charlie Hebdo is never out of ideas to stoke up the flames of racism, bigotry, intolerance and hatred. Remember Aylan Kurdi, the two-year-old, whose picture lying face down on a beach in Turkey caused an international outcry over the human cost of the migrant crisis?

The magazine’s latest cartoon is about that Syrian refugee - an infant who drowned - as an adult committing a sex assault in Germany. The cartoon depicts Aylan's body alongside a caption suggesting he would have become a "groper in Germany". It follows the revelation that gangs of migrants carried out organized sexual assaults in Cologne on New Year's Eve.

I find the cartoon not only distasteful but also very insulting.
It is high time to correct such serious charges against migrants. The likelihood of a migrant becoming a sex pervert or a groper in Europe and western world is not more, but much less than the national average in his/her adopted country. Crime statistics in those countries are sufficient to prove me right.
For our purpose, let’s limit our discussion to Germany. German General Act on Equal Treatment (AGG) that went into force in 2006 defines sexual harassment as "unwanted conduct of a sexual nature, including unwanted sexual acts and requests to carry out sexual acts, physical contact of a sexual nature, comments of a sexual nature … [that take] place with the purpose or effect of violating the dignity of the person concerned.”
Crime statistics show that sexual assaults against women in events like the Oktoberfest and New Year's Eve have always been there. As a result of fear of being sexually molested or assaulted, including groping, nearly half the German women avoid joining in such events where they could be victimized. Even a year ago, before the refugee problem became a reality in Germany many German women were groped by unruly beer and wine drinking German males.
In 2010, a survey by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth stated that 60% of women said they had experienced sexual harassment in public, at the workplace, or socially. Out of those, one out of two (~50%) women said she had feared for her own safety and one woman in ten (~10%) reported actual physical violence. In 22% of cases, the incident took place at work or school. Germany, like many of the western countries, has a serious sex crime problem. [See, e.g., Wake Up Germany, You've Got A Serious Sexual Harassment Problem, Jan. 30, 2013]
To now put the blame squarely on the fleeing refugees that have settled in recent months in Germany is wrong. It was not clear that any of the men involved in the assault against females in Cologne were among those who arrived in Germany over the past year from conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
Henriette Reker, Cologne’s mayor, who was stabbed during a campaign event in October by a German man who opposed her welcoming attitude toward migrants, sought to play down the links to refugees, after meeting with police, state and city officials. “There are no indications that this involved people who have sought shelter in Cologne as refugees,” Ms. Reker said.
Since the start of the year, Chancellor Angela Merkel has come under renewed pressure from within her own conservative bloc, with Horst Seehofer, head of the Bavarian sister party to the chancellor’s Christian Democratic Union, calling for a cap of 200,000 refugees allowed into the country per year.
It is not difficult to postulate that the event in Cologne may have been exaggerated to paint a very damning picture on the migrants that are fleeing many parts of Asia and Africa to Europe and to force Ms. Merkel to change her position on the refugee debate.
For a fleeing refugee from a war torn country committing evil acts like groping or having forcible sex with anyone local is highly unlikely. He is not stupid to commit an act that could only jeopardize his chances of getting immigrated.
So the logical question that we should answer is: who benefits from painting the fleeing migrants as sex perverts or gropers?
The fascist, xenophobic groups in many parts of Europe oppose pluralism and diversity; they are against immigrants and refugees. And, sadly, in some countries like France they have been able to exploit the current crisis to rally the crowd behind them and win elections.
The far-right and anti-immigrant groups are also strong in many parts of Germany. They oppose the influx of refugees and seized on the attacks, saying they demonstrated the dangers associated with accepting huge numbers of migrants. “It is time to send a signal,” said Christopher Freiherr von Mengersen, head of the nationalist Pro-NRW movement, based in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. “We locals can no longer put up with everything that is being routinely swept under the rug based on a false sense of tolerance.”
Such far-right groups have their supporters within the racist and bigot intelligentsia. Take, for instance, the 59-year-old Akif Pirincci, an outspoken right-winger and German writer, who has warned that Christian Germany is becoming Islamic. His books, one of which is called Germany Gone Mad, were best-sellers until last autumn, when big publishers and bookshops chose not to distribute these any more because of their message of racism and bigotry.
It is not impossible that some of the criminal elements from the fascist groups had masqueraded as migrants to implicate the wider migrant community. The Veterans Today says: “There are reports of police standing around with their hands in their pockets while nightclub bouncers come to the aid of women being groped and mobbed.  Thus, when police officials say this seems like an organized attack, we feel safe in looking at police as not only standing aside but undercover police as the likely parties involved in the assaults as well. We expect to see more incidents like these, staged by police and carefully coordinated with the press, playing on and building hysteria against not only refugees but Islam as well."
The Charlie Hebdo magazine has been widely condemned on social media and accused of racism. Twitter users called the image "disgusting" and "tasteless", as well as accusing the magazine of racism and Islamophobia.
The magazine’s attempt to promote intolerance and hatred against the immigrant community is simply preposterous. It’s impossible to predict how one would end up. As Jordanian queen Rania had twitted, “Aylan could've been a doctor, a teacher, a loving parent."
We simply don’t know how Aylan would have turned up some 20 years later. We are surely entitled to imagine the best: if Aylan were alive, like Steve Job’s Syrian father, he would one day father another Steve Job. We simply don’t know!

Playing with anxiety, fears and the worst of our imagination is not funny, it is down right criminal. After all, imagination can not only shape our minds but it can also weave the fabric of reality itself by playing a very real role in our decision making. Thus, as much as a positive imagination can provide us with rich lifelike experiences and give us a powerful opportunity to develop empathy and compassion for the ‘other’ people, and literally reshape and retrain our brains, similarly, a negative imagination can reshape and retrain our brains to do just the opposite - the most appalling crimes against the ‘other’ people.

Israel First

Hillary Clinton has always been a great supporter of the Zionist state. To her, the interest of Israel supersedes any other international causes, and sometimes even domestic. Here is an article on the subject.

PROTESTERS DEMAND GITMO PRISON'S CLOSURE

It’s been seven years since President Obama made the lofty promise to shut down Guantánamo Bay Detention Center, the overseas prison notorious for its inhumane treatment of terrorism detainees. But as the 14th anniversary of the prison's opening rolls around, Gitmo still houses 104 detainees. This Saturday, South Florida organizers marched in Doral to the United States Southern Command — which is responsible for all U.S. military activities in South America and Central America — to protest the detention center's continued abuses.
“There is no excuse for there to be 104 prisoners. The U.S. has already cleared half of these prisoners for release, so if the U.S. itself admits that these men pose no danger to civilians, we don’t see any reason for them to still be detained,” says Conor Munro, an organizer with People’s Opposition to War, Imperialism, and Racism (POWIR). “Southern Command is the place where the U.S. plans torture for the detainees; it’s the place where they decide which detainees are going to be released, so we think it’s an appropriate place to list our demands.”

Prisoners exchanged between Iran and the USA

Iran and the US have reached a settlement on exchange of a number of prisoners, Justice Department said on Saturday.

Prosecutor Abbas Jaafari told IRNA that four dual nationality Iranian-American prisoners, passing prison terms in Iran, will be exchanged with seven Iranian nationals languishing at the US jails.

The settlement included a clause according to which the US will no longer pursue extradition of 14 Iranians for alleged involvement in purchasing arms from the US to Iran.

Communal Violence in 2015 in Indian states of UP, Bihar and Haryana

Neha Dabhade has compiled a report on 2015 communal violence plaguing India. The report is posted below.
==========================================================
Communal Violence in 2015: A glimpse into Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Haryana
Neha Dabhade

North India has reported highest number of instances of communal violence in the year 2015.  Some news reports went as far as calling the cow belt of India a tinderbox of communal violence. Some characteristics were discerned to have beset the violence all over northern India and particularly in Uttar Pradesh. Communal violence was mostly preceded by hate speeches by political leaders and Parliamentarians including ministers. The speeches served as a cue to the aggressive elements to resort to violence with impunity. Social media like facebook and whatsApp were used extensively to spread misinformation, rumors as in case of riots in Shamshabad. Most incidents of communal violence preceded elections, including panchayat elections in UP. Even a smallest incident could trigger off communal violence due to the polarization of the society. As said by a BJP activist in UP, “Hindus and Mohammedans can’t live together any longer” (The Hindu, 2015).
Communal Violence in Uttar Pradesh:
Uttar Pradesh which is slated for State assembly elections in 2017, witnessed 68 instances of communal violence in the first half of 2015.  Western UP was particularly on the boil.
4th January, 2015 Agra
Agra was tense when Muslim youth cut electric wires of the market to clear the way for a procession on the occasion of Eid-eMilad-un- Nabi. Shopkeepers objected to cutting of wires and subsequently led to rioting and stone pelting (The Hindu, 2015).
16th January, 2015 Bareilly
In Bareilly, a slaughtered animal was found outside a religious place in Sahukara Naugoan. The police registered an FIR against unidentified persons for defiling of a religious place. Local BJP leaders were booked for obstructing the police from doing their duty. Two companies of PAC were deployed to contain the violence. There were no reports of the number of dead or injured. (The Hindu, 2015).
2nd May, 2015 Shamli
17 persons were injured in Kandhla area of Shamli during the clash between Tablighi Jammat volunteers and Jat youth in a local train. The group of Jats allegedly attacked and beat up five members of the Tablighi Jamaat. The members of the minority community demanded arrests of the culprits in the case. (The Hindu, 2015).
29th May, 2015 Lucknow
Violence erupted in Lucknow when Hindus and Muslims quarrelled over the use of loudspeakers by a temple at the time of azaan. Stone pelting was resorted to by the mob though no one was reportedly injured. The police also reported that both sides opened fire. The police arrived on the spot and diffused tension (The Hindu, 2015).
29th August,2015 Muzaffarnagar
Communal violence broke out in Muzafarnagar ironically marking the second anniversary of the Muzafarnagar riots that took place in 2013. The Bajrang Dal on 29thAugust attacked the vehicle of Nazeer Ahmad Qasmi, a popular cleric of Muzaffarnagar. Followed by this incident there were many rumors doing round in the area. The Muslims demanded the arrests of the activists of Bajrang Dal. In another incident, violence erupted in the Kutba village when the Muslim victims of the riots in 2013 came back to the village to collect bricks from their abandoned houses to build houses in the other villages they have settled in. These Muslims were attacked and beaten up by the Jats from the village. The agitated Muslim mob upon being returned by the police with no action taken to arrest the culprits, resorted to blocking the main road. This blockade led to clashes between the Muslim and Jat youth. The number of injured were not reported (The Hindu, 2015).
4th September, 2015 Shamshabad
In early September communal clash was witnessed in Shamshabad, 25 kms from Agra over an objectionable post on Facebook against Prophet Mohammad. The violence spread to other nearby villages. A mob enraged over the post vandalized four religious places. They forced shut shops and set fire to some structures. The vigilante mob caught hold of a shop owner, Mr. Gupta, who allegedly posted the objectionable post on Facebook. He was beaten up and the mob attempted to hang him. The police registered a case against the mob for disturbing law and order and another FIR was registered against Mr. Gupta for posting the objectionable comments. Over 100 people from both communities have been booked (The Hindu, 2015).
28th September, 2015 Bisada village, Dadri
The incident that shocked the nation and questioned the moral fiber of our society was the lynching of 58 years old Mohammad Aqlakh in Bisada, Dadri over rumors of consumption and storage of beef in his refrigerator. Prior to the lynching, a priest using a temple loudspeaker claimed that the Aqlakh family had consumed beef. Following this the mob rushed to lynch Mohammad Aqlakh resulting in his death and critically injuring his 21 year old son, Danish. The police instead of promptly arresting the culprits sent the meat in the refrigerator of Aqlakh to the forensic laboratory for checking if its beef (Times of India , 2015). Eventually BJP leader’s son was arrested in this case.
4th October, 2015 Chitehra and Kudakhedi
The tension created by Dadri incident spilled over to two other adjacent villages of Chitehra and Kudakhedi. In Chitehra village, a head of a calf was found which led to rumor of cow slaughter and subsequent tension. Similarly in Kudakhedi a calf belonging to a farmer died of natural causes. However, trouble mongers spread rumours to give this incident a communal turn (The Hindu, 2015).
22nd October, 2015 Fatehpur district (Allahabad)
Instances of communal violence during religious procession are very common as demonstrated in an incident in Fatehpur district of UP. Riot broke out when an idol procession was taken through a route different from the one permitted. On the changed route a Mosque was located. Stone pelting was resorted to by both the communities. Two houses were partially damaged and two bicycles and three motorcycles were set on fire.  However no major injuries were reported. PAC and local force was deployed and the police claimed to have diffused the situation (The Indian Express, 2015).
6th November, 2015 Mainpuri
Riots broke out in Mainpuri in Agra when a mob nearly lynched four Muslims. The mob alleged that the four Muslims had slaughtered a cow and skinned it. The police however found that the cow was already dead when the owner handed it over to the four for skinning it in order to sell the skin in a tannery. The rioting mob set fire to more than a dozen shops belonging to Muslims. 7 cops were injured. The police filed two FIRs, one against the men charged with killing the cow and the second against 500 unidentified men for triggering riots when section 144 of CrPC was already in place anticipating trouble during the panchayat polls (Times of India, 2015). The police found that some right wing organizations have been at play in spreading hatred and planning the riot by mobilizing the mob (Times of India, 2015).  A total of 30 arrests were made invoking stringent sections of IPC including 307 (attempt to murder), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc). The police didn’t divulge the names of the right wing organizations (Times of India, 2015).
14th November, 2015 Aligarh
What’s perhaps alarming is that Hindutva forces wedging a drift between Dalits and Muslims. A minor clash between two groups of youth over bursting of crackers occurred was portrayed as a “Dalit vs Muslim” clash by VHP and BJP. This incident occurred in Aligarh where Gaurav, a 22 year old dalit boy died due to the injuries sustained during the clash. VHP and BJP demanded that Gaurav’s family gets Rs. 40 lakhs as compensation as been given to the family of Mohammad Akhlaq (The Hindu, 2015).
Communal Violence in Bihar:
Bihar witnessed polls last year but the polls were preceded by heightened communal violence in order to polarize communities and consolidate vote banks. The issues raked up most for spreading violence were – throwing of animal carcasses in religious places, conflict over route of religious processions, desecration of idols and land disputes. After the split of the alliance in Bihar between BJP-JD(U) in 2013, the number of communal incidents have increased to 445 in the period of June 18, 2013 to June 30,2015 up from 92 between January 1, 2010 to June 18, 2013.
8th January, 2015 Sasaram, Rohtas
A dispute over a kite which landed in a graveyard in Rohtas turned communal claiming one life and injuring 17. The background to this conflict was reported to be an altercation turned violent over a Muslim man reprimanding a Hindu boy over urinating outside his shop (The Indian Express, 2015).
19th January, 2015 Azizpur
Azizpur communal clash was a major riot. The body of one Bhartendu Sahni of Bahilwara was found in the field of Wasi Ahmed in Azizpur. It was alleged that Bhartendu was in love with Wasi Ahmed’s daughter and his son enraged with this love affair killed Bhartendu and dumped his body in the field. The Sahni community upon discovering the body torched 40 houses of Muslims in Azizpur and killed five people. The villagers of Azizpur felt that the violence was result of Sahni community’s attempt to further marginalize Muslims of the village. The police has lodged a case against 2000 people and arrested 13 who have been named in the FIR (The Indian Express, 2015).
26th April, 2015 Phulwariya village

8th May, 2015 Chandauti village, Gaya
So volatile and charged was a communal scene in Bihar that petty fight over a cricket match between two local teams in Gaya’s Chandauti village took a communal turn (The Indian Express, 2015).
17th May, 2015 Daudnagar, Aurangabad
Communal violence erupted in this village when a rumor spread that a group of Muslims was found with a missing buffalo. Gunfire was used in the incident leaving one dead and 13 injured. The residents reported that tension prevailed in the village for many months over discovery of a defaced Hanuman idol during a Muharram procession(The Indian Express, 2015)
18th November, 2015 Vaishali
In November, communal violence erupted when a 19 year old Mohammad Rizwan lost control of the pick-up van while driving and rammed into the house of a 60 year old man in Vaishali. The man was killed along with his 8 month old granddaughter. When rumors spread that Rizwan has been let off by the police after preliminary inquiries, a mob clashed leading to death of a 17 year old Vikas Kumar after being critically injured in the police firing (The Indian Express, 2015).
Communal Violence in Haryana
The violence in Haryana was aimed at consolidating the socio-political hegemony of the dominant Jat community and countering the seemingly assertive Muslim community in order to maintain status quo in a feudal society.
15th March 2015, Hisar
A church was vandalized in Kaimri village, Hisar. The priest in Kaimri village was threatened by one Anil Godra. He alleged that the priest was trying to convert the villagers into Christianity. The Church was under construction and Anil Godra along with his accomplices allegedly pulled down the cross of Jesus and replaced it with an idol of Lord Hanuman. The Police registered an FIR against 14 persons (The Indian Express, 2015).
25th May and 1st July 2015, Atali
The major instance of communal violence was in the village of Atali. The conflict between the Muslims and Jats in Atali was over construction of a Mosque. The land where a makeshift Mosque existed and Muslims from the village prayed for many decades was claimed by the Jats in the village as property of the Panchayat and objected to the building of the Mosque. However the district court had ruled in favour of the construction of Mosque. There were two bouts of violence which claimed one life and injured 19. The police’s delay and hesitation to arrest the accused named in the FIR emboldened the Jat youth to mount the second attack in July preceded by the first attack in May. In the aftermath of the riot the immediate concern was the social boycott imposed by the powerful Jats on the minority Muslims.
5th July, 2015 Palwal
The spillover of the Atali violence could be seen in Tikri Brahman village in Palwal, only 30 kms away from Atali in July. Though the exact triggering point wasn’t spelled out in the report, it was reported that the altercation between two youth led to a riot in which 17 people were injured (Indian Express, 2015).

The Menacing Jewish Settler Movement

The Jewish settler movement has been growing like a cancer for decades. It is partly organic and partly inorganic, made up of Jews born inside and outside Israel, respectively. It has become a real threat to peaceful solution of the Palestinian problem.
As I have noted a few times before many of the rank and file of this menacing movement come from the western world. They are financed by rich Jewish donors and the Christian evangelical movement - the latter more properly known as the Christian Zionists - from the USA and Europe. They are more radicalized than most Israeli Zionists who were born inside Israel, and consequently, have been terrorizing Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.
So religiously charged these settlers from the western countries are that most of them prefer to settle inside the Occupied West Bank creating newer illegal, Jewish settlements there while making the lives of ordinary Palestinians simply miserable.
It is worth mentioning here that though the Israeli government considers these settler outposts in the West Bank unauthorized, it provides them with electricity, running water and security. (The international community, rightly, considers all the exclusively Jewish settlements Israel has established in the territories it conquered in the 1967 Six Day War to be illegal.)

The criminal activities of the members of the settler movement, although known inside Israel, have been almost a taboo in the West. Last week (Jan. 11, 2016), Naomi Zeveloff, the Middle East correspondent of the Jewish daily – Forward – wrote an article about them in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Many of the young Jewish American settlers live with the so-called hilltop youth, a loosely affiliated group of Jewish settlers in their teens and 20s who live away from their parents on the hilltops surrounding established settlements. The hilltop youth are now an established entity. Several hundred adolescents from both sides of the Green Line — including some girls — roam the West Bank hills. Some are yeshiva dropouts. Others are students of Rabbi Yitzchak Ginsburgh of Od Yosef Chai yeshiva, in Yitzhar. Ginsburgh, a prominent scholar of Kabbalah and a member of the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement, has concocted a potent ideological brew for this new generation of Jewish radicals, spouting mystical admonitions to live in nature and Kabbalah-based rationales for Jewish racial superiority and violence against Arabs.
Meanwhile, two other prominent rabbis at Od Yosef Chai have given the hilltop youths’ penchant for attacking Arabs even stronger religious legitimacy. In their 2010 book, “The King’s Torah (Torat Hamelech), Part One: Laws of Life and Death between Israel and the Nations,” Rabbis Yitzhak Shapira and Yosef Elitzur declared, “The prohibition ‘Thou Shalt Not Murder’ applies only ‘to a Jew who kills a Jew’.” Non-Jews, they wrote, are “uncompassionate by nature” and assaults on them “curb their evil inclination,” while infants and children of Israel’s enemies may be killed, since “it is clear that they will grow to harm us.” It is worth noting that up until 2013, Od Yosef Chai yeshiva received government funding and support. It has also received money from American donors.
Members of the hill-top youth group have perpetrated so-called “price tag” attacks, using firebombs and spray paint to damage Palestinian property.

Many of the Jews living inside Israel are willing to overlook such crimes by their fellow youths. Even any interrogation by the Shin Beth is unwelcome, as they say: “Jews don’t torture other Jews. Stop the inquisition.”
The hilltop youth have always had power, which they wielded through violent acts, often under the cover of night. But for most Israelis, these were distant events perpetrated by extremists in the West Bank, a kind of Wild West they rarely think about or visit.

For years, hill-top youth members have been committing vigilante acts against Palestinians, torching olive groves and defacing mosques. But until recently, Israeli leaders in the mainstream have been reluctant to label them terrorists — a term usually reserved for Arabs. Israeli courts have also done little to punish this kind of behavior. In 2013, Israel’s defense minister, Moshe Ya’alon, defined price tag activity as “illegal organizing.” And according to a report by the Israeli rights group Yesh Din, just 7.4% of complaints filed by Palestinians from 2005 to 2014 have ended in indictments against Israeli civilians.

Now, the arson attack in the Palestinian village of Duma last July, which killed an 18-month-old infant and his parents, appears to show that the hilltop youth are capable of not only destruction, but murder, too.
It also turns out that several of those detained as part of the Duma investigation have U.S. citizenship. That may reflect the disproportionate presence of Americans among settlers overall. According to Sara Yael Hirschhorn, an Oxford University scholar, some 15% of all settlers are Americans, compared with 2% to 3% of all Israeli citizens. The prominence of Americans among those detained echoes the historic leadership roles Americans have played in Israel’s contemporary right-wing radicalism, from Meir Kahane, a native New Yorker, to Ginsburgh, who was born in St. Louis and spent much of his youth in Philadelphia, and Baruch Goldstein, the Brooklyn born-and-raised physician who in 1994 murdered 29 Muslims at prayer at the Cave of the Patriarchs, a site in Hebron holy to Muslims and Jews.
Eliezer Shekhtman who moved to Israel from Chicago believes that Jewish civilian violence, which he calls 'values', against the Palestinian civilians has a place in the greater political scheme.
During Hanukkah, Shekhtman was a guest at a Jewish wedding at which a group of young men danced while waving guns in the air. One thrust a knife through a photograph of Ali Saad Dawabsheh, the infant killed in the Duma fire. Video footage of the wedding was leaked to the press, causing mainstream Israelis to recoil at the radicalism in their midst. Shekhtman said he did not see the man stabbing the photo. But the idea did not scandalize him: “It doesn’t bother me. I don’t know if the father threw stones or if he didn’t, or if the baby would have thrown stones or wouldn’t have if he lived till the age of 15 or 20. Come on, it’s a picture.”
Shekthman’s statement says volumes about the criminal mindset of these Jewish American settlers who see the Occupied Territories as a land to plunder, pillage and slay the indigenous Palestinian people to make the land kosher for the Jews only, and of course, their Christian evangelical patrons.
The indigenous Palestinians see themselves abandoned by the powerful nations of the UN. In sheer hopelessness and a sense of dehumization they are, regrettably, now resorting to nihilistic activities trying to harm Israeli Jews and getting killed every day by the trigger happy Israelis - civilians and security forces alike. It is a sad development in a region that has cried for justice for too long – almost 70 years - only to be ignored and severely punished for their noncompliance to the Zionist dream of Eretz Israel.
While the western governments continue to close their eyes to the heinous crimes of the Jewish settlers in the Occupied Territories they are not so nonchalant about misguided Muslim youths. Even an intention to join or live in a territory that is administer by a radical organization, deemed terrorist here, can land them in the prison with probably no chance of ever getting out. What do you call such an attitude? In my dictionary, it’s called double-standard. Pure and simple!
