Russia is probably the biggest supplier of arms to the Burmese military.
Not just arms. Since the attempted coup last year, there have been economic
and trade delegations with the military, and Russia has been strongly
defending the military at the United Nations Security Council.
The same Russian jets bombing Ukraine have been sold to the Burmese
military and are used for bombing civilians.
So why haven’t we asked you to take an action on Russia until now?
As campaigners with few resources, we have to be strategic about when and
where is the best place to apply pressure to have the maximum impact. We
know you are busy and have lots of demands on your time. We only ask you to
do things which we think will make a difference.
With careful timing and targeting we have helped persuade the British
government and European Union to impose several rounds of economic
sanctions, Countries like Turkey, Serbia and Ukraine have said they’ll stop
arming the Burmese military, and dozens of companies have stopped doing
business with the military.
But activists from Burma tell us that just because Russia is harder to
influence, doesn’t mean they should get a free ride. They should be called
out for what they are doing. So let’s call them out!
