  Five people have been killed and 17 bodies recovered over the past 24 hours, Gaza’s Health Ministry said in a statement.

  The overall death toll from Israel’s two-year war on the Strip has risen to 68,858 with 170,664 wounded, the ministry said in a statement.

  “A number of victims remain under the rubble and in the streets as ambulance and civil defence teams have been unable to reach them so far,” it said.

  Since the ceasefire started on October 11, at least 226 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza, with 594 wounded and 499 bodies recovered from the vast debris.

  Civil defence workers use ceasefire to recuperate after 2-year ordeal

  Emergency workers in Gaza are trying to recover during the precarious truce, knowing that at any moment they can be called out to risk their lives again during Israeli bombardment.

  “Living through this genocide – everyone just wanted to survive. But my colleagues and I just wished – that if we make it – we do not lose our minds over the scenes we’ve witnessed and what we’ve gone through,” rescue worker Abdullah al-Majdalawi told Al Jazeera.

  Firefighter Nouh al-Shaghnoubi said with the ceasefire slowing down attacks he’s now “getting to know my family again”.

  “After losing many colleagues and friends we started to realize what had happened to us,” said al-Shaghnoubi. “There are no houses left for us… We miss the feeling of being safe. However, we will continue to live our lives.”
