The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a decision by the town council of Hollywood, South Carolina, to adopt a hate crime ordinance.
The town council adopted the ordinance during a meeting yesterday, making them the 20th municipality in South Carolina to do so. The state has no hate crime law.
Town of Hollywood passes first hate crime ordinance
“We welcome the town of Hollywood’s decision to adopt a hate crime ordinance and urge South Carolina lawmakers to do the same on the state level,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Crimes committed on the basis of bigotry are on the rise nationwide and must be taken seriously.”
He noted that CAIR has previously expressed support for a proposed statewide hate crime ordinance in South Carolina.
