On December 20th, a residential house in the name of deceased Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani was among the three properties which were seized by the Indian authorities. The seizure was carried out under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, a draconian law that the Indian state has weaponized to detain Kashmiri political dissidents and their family members, expel Kashmiri employees who are said to have pro-freedom “views”, and to confiscate their properties and dispossess them of their basic rights. The seizure is part of India’s systematic crackdown on Kashmiri political activists, particularly the socio-religious organization like Jamaat-e-Islami. Previously, on 17th December, the Indian state investigation agency had seized 11 properties that they alleged belonged to the Jamaat.
Justice for All strongly condemns the seizure of properties of Kashmiri leaders who do not agree with Indian occupation policy.
